Underground Utility Location Services Overview
This program was created by the School City of Hammond/Area Career Center, to offer students employment level training in underground utility location services. Students are taught by a USIC employee where upon completion, students are hired and begin working for USIC.
Underground Utility Detection Services is a course that will offer hands-on activities and real-world experiences related to the skills essential in locating underground utilities. Students will be introduced to the history and traditions of utility types, installation methods and the theory of electromagnetic locating. They will also learn and apply knowledge of safe work techniques and industry-best practices. In addition, students are introduced to blueprint reading, electrical theory principles, locating equipment use and job site safety. Students will learn how locating underground utilities is necessary in the excavation and construction industry not only to keep excavators and homeowners safe while digging, but also prevent the disruption of vital utility services such as electric, gas, phone, cable and fiber optics just to name a few.
