Letter to Parents: 11/29/07
Dear Parent,
Our class is beginning a study on Earth History that is our Geology unit for the second trimester. This course introduces students to the history of Earth and how it has developed over geological time. It’s important for young people on the brink of independence to appreciate the fact that they live on a planet that has used tools from stones, diverted water into channels for irrigation, and how to collect precious metals from ores. In addition to our class activities, we have a large project that students will be responsible for. The project will be a Scavenger Hunt. Students will be allowed to choose their own projects to achieve 100 points. There are 10 different “mini” projects that students will need to conduct research on and prepare. A handout has been distributed as to what these selections are and what the points are worth. This project is due January 11, 2008. Our second project will be visiting a museum. Students will gain knowledge and skills in observations and investigations to prepare them to live in developing world. Our curriculum will prepare the students for the field trip. The tentative field trip dates are set for late January 2008. More information will come with the permission slip.
I have several dates scheduled for the library use, but the majority of the work should be completed at home. I will also do periodic checks for completion to make sure students are on task. I have included the grading requirements, due dates, rubric, and tips to help you and your child succeed this second trimester! A copy of this letter and the attachments are also listed on my webpage through the school. Please note that I will adhere to the grading scale unless prior agreements have been arranged.
As one final request, please sign and date the bottom portion and have your child return it as soon as possible.
Thank you,
Ms. Knipe
