Letter to Parents:

Dear Parent,

Our class is beginning a study on the Diversity of Life that is our Biology unit for the last trimester. This course introduces students to the big picture of life on Earth. It’s important for young people on the brink of independence to appreciate the fact that they live on a small, crowded planet among millions of other kinds of organisms. Some of the organisms that we will look at involve larger projects that are to be completed at home. In addition to our class activities, we have three “collection” projects that are students will be responsible for. Our first project will be a seed collection. Students will recognize that seeds are living organisms in a dormant state. They will also observe and describe the first developmental stages of a plant. Our second project will be a leaf collection. Students will investigate transpiration and plant reproduction. Our third project will be an insect collection. Students will be introduced to the concept of adaptation by pointing out the structures of an insect and relate its adaptations to the insects environment. It is good for them to know that life has a history on Earth. It is our hope that in their efforts to answer the question “What is life?” and in their introduction to diversity, students will develop a personal interest in life in all its forms.

I have several dates scheduled for the library use, but the majority of the work should be completed at home. I will also do periodic checks for completion to make sure students are on task. I have included the grading requirements, due dates, rubric, and tips to help you and your child succeed this last trimester! A copy of this letter and the attachments are also listed on my webpage through the school. Please note that I will adhere to the grading scale unless prior agreements have been arranged.

As one final request, please sign and date the bottom portion and have your child return it as soon as possible.
