I would like to begin generating communication with the community through a Principal’s blog. This will be a great opportunity for me to keep you up to date with the school’s initiatives and other information that pertains to the school in general. Let’s get started!
Academics
Our school is working on an initiative called RtI (Response to Instruction). Response to instruction or RtI is a state initiative that focuses on the needs of all students at all levels. For example, a student reading below grade level must have interventions put in place. The interventions must be research-based strategies in the deficient areas shown by the student on one or many of the screening exams or measuring tools that all students already do at Scott Middle School. Some examples of the screening exams we use are: the SRI/Lexile test, Acuity, classroom grades, classroom tests, ISTEP test scores, and of course teacher input among other tools.
By identifying whether a student is extremely advanced or behind, teachers can develop lesson plans to address individual student needs more effectively. More detailed information on RtI can be found at the following website: http://www.doe.in.gov/rti/index.html . We are implementing this at each grade level and are beginning to see improvements in grades, SRI (reading) scores as well as behavior.
Community Relations
Beginning on February 17th, I will be hosting our first monthly “Community Update” night. During this presentation I will give updates on what is going on at Scott and also take time to address questions regarding our initiatives or other concerns about the functioning of our school.
New and Cool
We are looking into pricing for a new marquee sign in the front of the building. The current sign is not holding up the letters any longer and is becoming an eye sore. Our hopes are to have a standard LED sign to share information regarding the school.
PTSA
Please consider joining the Scott Middle School PTSA. We finally have an active PTSA and would like to build on the foundation of what currently exists. Please remember that we cannot accomplish excellence without your help. On February 17th, we will make you aware of opportunities for volunteering in the school so to help us develop successful students.
