ABOUT MIDDLE SCHOOL 

 

Q:  Where do we go the first day of school when we arrive?

A:  A couple of days before school starts in August, the counselors will post class rosters on the entrance at door “A”.

Find the following information:

                        ROOM NUMBER

This is where you will begin on the first day.

 

Q:  What is the daily schedule?

A:  In general, your classes will each be 51 minutes long with 20 minutes for lunch and 5 minutes to pass between classes.  On Thursday, you will have an Advisory class the last 20 minutes of the day.  You may enter the building beginning at 7:40 A.M.

Q:  What classes will we take in the sixth grade?

A:  All students will have the same 5 basic academic classes – English, Math, Social Studies, Reading, and Science.  In addition you will experience each of the 6 Practical Arts classes – Cooking, Sewing, Art, Industrial Art, Quest, and Current Events – for a period of 6 weeks per class.  You will also take Physical Education for 18 weeks and either Music or Choir for 18 weeks.


 

 

 

Q:  What do we need to know about lunch?

A:  You will need your ID card in the cafeteria as well as know your ID number.  Lunch is currently $1.75 and Breakfast is $1.00.  Free/Reduced Lunch forms are available in the Main Office.

      There are 3 lunch lines in the cafeteria.  One changes daily and is called the “Hot Lunch Line”.  Then there is a line for Hamburgers, Corn Dogs, Fries, and Sandwiches.  The last line is the Scorpion Snack Shop filled with all kinds of goodies.  As always, you have the option of bringing your own lunch too.

      There are also vending machines located around the cafeteria.  Please remember food and drink is not allowed in the classrooms and in the hallways.  You must finish these before leaving the cafeteria.

 

Q:  Can we ride our bikes to school?

A:  Yes.  There is a bike rack located at the front of the school.  Please remember to bring a lock for your bike.

 

Q:  Can we bring skateboards to school?

A:  No.

 

Q:  Can we bring walkmans, radios, CD players, etc.?

A:  No. 

 

Q:  What is the dress code?

A:  You will find a detailed dress code on the Scott Middle School website (http://hammond.k12.in.us).  If you are not sure about whether or not your outfit is appropriate – take the safe route and find something else to wear.  In general, skirts and shorts must reach the tips of the fingers, no flip-flop type beach shoes, undergarments should not be visible above the pants line, and t-shirts advertising drugs, alcohol, or offensive matters are prohibited.

 

Q:  What do we do if we forget our locker combinations?

A:   During the first week of school you will give your locker combination to your advisory teacher – ask them for help.  You will also have a lock for your Gym class – the Gym teacher can assist you with concerns regarding that lock.

 

Q:  What do we do if we lose/forget our class schedule?

A:  Go to the Counselors’ office for another copy.  On the first day of school, attach your schedule to the inside of your agenda so that this situation is avoided.


 

 

 

Q:  What happens if we are tardy?

A:  If you are late to school, go straight to the Attendance Office first and then to class.  If you are late to a class, a teacher may give you a warning at first and if it continues you will begin receiving detentions, in class behavior modification (ICBM), or out of school suspensions.

 

Q:  Do I need to contact the school if I am going to be absent?

A:  Yes.  Your parents must contact the Attendance Office at 989-7371.

 

Q:  Can I chew gum in school?

A:  No.

 

Q:  Do we have recess?

A:  No.

 

Q:  Are there school dances?

A:  Yes.  You will need your ID to attend.

 

Q:  Are there any clubs or activities?

A:  Yes.  Scott has National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, Garden Club, Science Olympiad, Chess Club, Conflict Mediators, etc.

 

Q:  What do I do if I have a conflict with another student?

A:  You can discuss the situation with the teachers or the counselors.  The counselors can set up a conflict mediation for you to help work through this situation.

 

Q:  Are there any sports to participate in?

A:  Yes.  Scott has football, cheerleading, basketball, track, and wrestling.  You must maintain certain grades to participate in these sports.
